An apple a day keep the doctor away! But did you know that this fiber filled fruit is not only good for you, it can be a true indulgence. One apple has about 5.5 grams of dietary fiber. It also has 28 percent of the daily recommended value of Vitamin C and is very high in Vitamin B6. Apples don’t have to be a boring piece of fruit – they can be a key ingredient in many delicious items, including breads, muffins, cobblers, and crisps. Apples can make an amazing afternoon snack, combining a sliced apple with cheese or any nut butter for added protein.
For the best tasting apples, they should be stored in the refrigerator in a plastic bag. They will stay crisp for three to four weeks. (Just think you can always have some fresh fruit at home!) Outside of the refrigerator, they will stay crisp for about a week. Apples should not be stored with other produce because they give off the natural gas ethylene, which causes lettuce and other vegetables to wilt and turn brown.
Try a simple baked apple dessert. Just slice the apples, place in an oven safe dish, sprinkle with cinnamon, nuts, and raisins, continue basting with your favorite fruit juice, bake at 350 for 20 – 30 minutes until the apples are soft. Enjoy and Bon appetite!
